Composing a Top-Grade 5-Paragraph Informative Essay: Tips and Tricks

An informative essay is one that states something, explains something, or gives directions. For example, if you were creating a composition on the subject of your summer vacation, it should give appropriate information about the vacation that would be relevant and interesting to the reader.

Writing a high-quality paper does not have to be a difficult task, as long as you have a basic understanding of the main parts and what goes into making them a great read.  It’s important that you are knowledgeable about your subject and can convey that information with clarity and structure.

Creating a top-grade essay in 5 paragraphs

A great essay should be composed of the following parts:

  • Introductory paragraph – Your introduction paragraph is where you make your thesis statement, the subject that will be discussed or argued in the following paragraphs. It should be clear and provide a solid basis for debate.
  • Argument paragraphs – Your argument paragraphs are made up of the research you’ve conducted in defence of your statement. This should include surveys, statistics, and interviews, the opinions of experts and other academically sound material, as well as your own analysis. Show a clear relationship between the argument and your subject. Ideally, there should be one supporting argument per paragraph, but as the subject is a 5-paragraph paper, try to keep the argument down to two paragraphs.
  • Counter-argument paragraph – After a presentation of the arguments supporting your thesis, make an objective presentation of the counter-argument. As with the argument paragraphs, the counter-argument should also show a direct relationship with your thesis subject and not be vague or meandering.
  • Concluding Paragraph – This should reiterate your thesis statement and indicate how you have succeeded in proving it. You should also state how you find the topic relevant to application and study – both present and future.
  • Your conclusion paragraph should be about the same length as the introductory paragraph; keep your statements concise and your sentences succinct.

In summary, a 5-paragraph essay should look like this:

  1. Introductory paragraph
  2. Argument paragraph 1
  3. Argument paragraph 2
  4. Counter-argument paragraph
  5. Conclusion

Keeping those main parts in mind, make sure you do your research carefully and employ clarity and creativity in your writing. In this manner, you can keep your thesis direct, succinct and informative. Make bold statements but always follow them up with verifiable facts and statistics – opinions may differ, but numbers cannot be disputed.
