Helpful hints for writing

  • Pay attention to the way you write your introduction paragraph. Don’t use the passive voice; use the active one. Instead of saying “she was died from the poison in the bottle”, say “she drank the poison in the bottle and died.” It makes more of an active feeling for the reader, and it’s easier for them to become absorbed in the story. Avoid using first person. I, my and me should not be used. Be more general and your reader will be hooked.
  • The first paragraph is your first chance to make a good impression. The introduction also tells the reader what you are going to talk about. Put more effort into this paragraph than in any of the others. It will be well worth it.
  • The body paragraphs comprise most of the essay; it’s where you put your argument, evidence and main body of information or knowledge. If you are trying to persuade your reader, this is the place to do it. These paragraphs should be organized into a logical order, in order from most significant point to least.
  • The last sentence of each paragraph should exist as a transition sentence into the following paragraph. It helps to lead the reader from one point to the next. This really helps with the flow and fluidity of the paper.
  • The conclusion is the last paragraph of your essay. It shouldn’t be thought of as just an afterthought. It actually represents your last chance to make your persuasion, present your case, and make a memorable finale. There isn’t a rigid format to follow, but in some sense it’s a repeat of the introduction. Of course it shouldn’t be worded the same way. Both the introduction and the conclusion are summaries of your paper.
  • The conclusion can include a call to action. Make it powerful. This is your last chance to impress or convince your reader. Make it worthwhile. Restate your thesis and do it with confidence.
